Ce docu-fiction retrace la première grande civilisation européenne et la catastrophe naturelle qui l'a anéantie, donnant naissance à la légende de l'Atlantide. Vers 1 600 avant J.-C., un gigantesque volcan de la mer Egée sortit d'un long sommeil, déchira l'île de Théra (Santorin) et élimina les Minoens... Des archéologues et des historiens ont apporté leur aide pour raconter en images le mythe de la cité engloutie de l'Atlantide, que relaya notamment par le philosophe grec Platon.
